Is Breast Reduction Surgery A Choice For Me?
Share: Breast reduction surgery can be viable option for women whose breast are to large
for their body frames causing ongoing health problems such as chronic back, shoulder and neck pain. Other health problems associated with breast that are too large include a chronic rash from low hanging breast and poor posture.
Mammoplasty or breast reduction surgery will remove excessive fat, glandular tissue, and skin to make the breast a size that is more proportioned to the body. Your plastic surgeon will make an anchor shaped incision around the areola and horizontally down the breast. If your breasts are droopy the surgeon may have to reposition them up higher after removing the excessive tissue and if so it may be necessary to remove and reattach the areola and nipple to their new position. The down side to having the nipple and areola removed and reattached is it will affect your ability to breast feed in the future so if this is a concern you may need to wait until after your future planned pregnancy is complete before you choose breast reduction surgery.
One possible complication associated with this procedure is the loss of sensation around the nipples. Some patients experience a temporary loss of sensitivity to the nipple area whether or not the nipples are repositioned. While for other women, this loss of sensation may be permanent. This is a risk you should discuss with your doctor before surgery.
After surgery your breast will be wrapped in gauze and packed in surgical dressing. Your doctor may put in drain tubes to drain the excessive blood and fluids. Drain tubes are generally removed within one to two days at the same time the surgical dressing is changed.
Share: Your breast will be swollen, bruised, tender and sensitive after surgery and you will likely need pain medication to help your comfort level. Your doctor may also prescribe antibiotics to reduce the likely hood of future infections after surgery.
In addition to having the drain tubes removed and dressing changed, your after care will include removing your incisions within one to three weeks. The scaring from the incision will be pink to red for months but should fade over time to become less noticeable and easily hidden by bras or clothing.
Most women are able to return to work within a couple of weeks depending on the level of activity required by their job and can resume other normal activities with in the same time frame.
Age, gravity and future weight loss or weight gain can cause the breast to change shape and this may mean having another breast reduction surgery in the future. But for most patients whose weight remains consistent, future breast reduction isn't necessary.
Most women report an increase in self esteem, and improved health after surgery and patient satisfaction is generally quite high with this procedure.
