The short answer to my question is 'yes'! But it is a qualified yes, of course, as we should be careful of the terms like organic/natural/botanical skin care which now abound on cosmetics labels. They are the preferred adjectives for many nutraceutical companies because they increase their profits. It is as simple as that. What exactly do we mean by botanical skin care?
Any ingredients which are taken from plants are regarded as botanical. They are of course considered safe and as natural a product as can exist to replace lost moisture. Unlike the paraffin, petrol based and mineral oils which are found in so many nutraceutical products to-day. These are often damaging for our health What criteria can we use when we see the botanical skin care label?
First of all, we should try to be wary of claims that up to 50% of a product is botanical or organic. It may well be but we need to know in what proportion. This is a trick used by many companies. Half of the ingredients may indeed be organic but if they account for only 5% of the whole product, then they are not going to make any difference at all. Water is often a main ingredient but it is used as a filler and very often the
botanical skin care products will only have about between 1 and 3% real organic content. Not to mention all the synthetic preservatives, mineral oils and parabens which go to make up the rest! Secondly, we need to know where the plants have come from and above all in what conditions they have been grown. How pure are they and how clean is the environment where they were cultivated, the use of pesticides and a whole host of other doubts about the purity and quality of the whole processing in manufacture. What are the risks when storing and transporting this precious raw material? Some companies make sure that their plants are gown in perfect greenhouse conditions so that all contamination is avoided. Thirdly we need to remember too that the FDA has little or no control over cosmetic companies so the whole industry is unregulated which is astonishing in this day and age. The US is lagging behind other countries where some government controls are protecting the consumer. Fortunately there are some exceptions to unscrupulous companies which put profits first rather than the health of their customers. I know one company which will accept no compromise and will only produce botanical skin care products to the highest quality standards.
