Prague: The Czech Capital's Enticing Beauty

Little wonder then that the medieval centre of the city was named by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site at the beginning of the 90's

. Prague is often termed the 'Jewel in the Crown' among Central European cities. This, 'the mother of cities' and 'the city of hundred spires' are just some of the nicknames the classical city has been fondly referred to over the years.

Prague is located at the centre of the Bohemian province along the Vltava River. Founded by Princess Libu'e and her husband Premysl way back in the Paleolithic Age, it eventually became seat of the Bohemian Kings as well as a key trading centre.

Today, the city's numerous historical significant buildings have remained in very good condition over the centuries. One of the main reasons given for this is the fact that Prague managed to escape virtually all the major wars waged in Europe throughout its history.

Architectural styles range from baroque to neo-renaissance. What makes the visit even better is that these architectural masterpieces are not huddled into just one part of the city. Rather the ancient castles, quaint homes and ornate churches are spread across the city's expanse. You can see them just as easily when you visit the noisy shopping districts as you would when you stroll along the serene banks of the River Vltava.

Even though the city's beauty had been recognized for centuries, it was not until the fall of the Berlin Wall that the mass influx of tourists began. Before then, the political tension between Western and Eastern Europe was a stumbling block for people sharing a different ideology from the Republic of Czechoslovakia of the time. Today, tourists from anywhere in the world visit the city and freely mingle with the locals.

One place one must make a point is the Charles Bridge that links the Old Town with the Prague Castle and the Mala Strana (also referred to as the Lesser Town). The bridge was built in the 14th Century and is adorned with more than 70 statues throughout its length. The bridge is so popular with tourists that for you to get a good view and less crowded experience, it would be best that you visit either early morning or late in the evening.

If Charles Bridge is one of the City's major attractions, the premiere site in Prague is a title that can only aptly belong to Prague Castle. It is the single largest Middle Ages castle complex in the whole of Europe. The Prague Castle complex is really a set of several buildings including the preeminent Saint Vitus Cathedral, the Lobkowicz palace, Saint George's Basilica and several other palaces, viewing towers, modern day museums and art galleries.

Even with such historical beauty, the residents of Prague are cognizant of the benefits of modern day technology. This is why you can book a holiday apartment online way before your visit. That way, you ward off any potential inconveniences that you might experience by leaving your accommodation plans till very late.
