First-of-its-kind hybrid operating room at the new Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center will enable specialists at the Center to perform advanced cardiac and vascular surgeries, while simultaneously accessing powerful imaging technologies.
A first-of-its-kind hybrid operating room opening in early 2009 at the new Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Cardiovascular Center is designed to enhance collaborative care for patients with complex aortic and cardiovascular disease. Part of 14 new operating suites accommodating next-generation minimally invasive technology, the hybrid operating room will enable cardiac surgeons, vascular surgeons, and cardiologists at the Center to treat patients in an environment that features next-generation imaging and operative capabilities for multiple interventions without moving patients to various ORs and procedure rooms. This approach is increasingly being used for patients with complicated thoracic aortic aneurysms, aortic dissections, congenital tissue defects such as MarfanSyndrome and complex aortic arch disease.
Pioneering New Technologies
A leader in the clinical development of an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to treating cardiovascular disease using hybrid therapies, Brigham and Women's Hospital also has been a pioneer in the implementation of new technologies. The new hybrid operating room represents the first United States operating room installation of the Artiszeego from Siemens Medical Solutions, a robotically controlled, high-performance interventional x-ray ideally suited for use in OR environments. Brigham and Women's Hospital physicians worked with scientists and engineers to adapt this new technology to the cardiovascular OR environment. The system provides greater imaging power than mobile OR imaging systems and far greater flexibility than traditional floor- or ceiling-mounted imaging systems. The robotic arm carries a high-powered x-ray scanner that is specifically designed to rotate entirely around the patient, delivering detailed cross-sectional and three-dimensional images in a matter of seconds.
Advancing New Therapies
Just as technological advances have driven the trend of collaborating surgeons, the new hybrid operating room will enable additional procedures and provide patients with access to new technologies, such as percutaneous valve interventions without open heart surgery or cardiovascular bypass. For example, the hybrid operating room is serving as one arm of a new clinical study designed to compare a new catheter-placed aortic valve, called the Sapien valve, to traditional surgery and medical therapy for advanced aortic stenosis in patients at high risk for traditional surgery. The valve has been used in more than 400 patients in the United States and Europe to resolve the signs and symptoms of severe aortic stenosis.
