How to prepare your child for a stay in hospital

Spending time in hospital is never fun, no matter what age you are, but this can be especially difficult for a child who doesn't fully understand the reasoning or need for a long stay in hospital.

If your child has a hospital stay coming up there are several things you should do to put their mind at ease and wipe away any fears they may have about their visit. The first thing you should do is fully explain to your child why they need to go. Arriving at a huge building full of strangers can be a daunting and scary experience for a child so explaining the reasons for them being there will do a lot to quash their fears and help to get them ready for their stay.

Once you have explained the basics behind your child's hospital visit it's now time to make sure they feel as comfortable as possible during their stay. To do this it's always a good idea to get your child involved in the preparation for their hospital visit. If you can, spend a day shopping for new pajamas, a new toy or a book to take with them and use throughout their stay. Buying them something new will not only feel like a well deserved treat but will also be the one thing they are keen to use, or play with during their hospital visit. All of which will help to take their mind of the real reason for their stay.

When the date of your child's hospital stay draws nearer it's a good time to start packing a hospital bag for them. Make sure you get your child involved with their packing so they will feel involved and in turn feel more secure that they have their things around them to bring them a little bit of comfort during their stay. Make sure they pack their favourite toy or comforter so you can be sure they feel as at home as possible.

If your child feels anxious about going into hospital it might be a good idea to take them for a visit to the hospital, and the surrounding area, in advance. This will help them familiarize themselves with the area and will hopefully alleviate their fears and worries before their actual hospital appointment.

Unless there is an emergency it is more than likely your child will be attending a Childrens Hospital so you can be assured that there will be plenty of experts around to help familiarize your child with the staff and their surroundings. Unlike adult hospitals a specific child centered hospital will have playrooms, toys and murals, all of which will help ease your child into their hospital visit.

Spending time in hospital is never that much fun but if you take the time to prepare your child for their visit it doesn't have to be a scary and daunting experience.
