How To Buy A Classic Car

Owning a classic car is a great deal of fun, but can be a very big responsibility

. If you are to enjoy owning a classic car it is important that you buy the one that is right for you.

Think about what you want to do with your classic car, if you want it for occasional use then most models will probably be OK. If you want to use it as your day to day car then you need to be a bit more careful about which one you buy. Write a list of your favourite classic cars, then remove those that are not going to be practical for your circumstances.

Remove from your list any cars that you do not think you can afford to buy and run. Bear in mind not just the cost of insurance and servicing, make sure that you know how much things like exhausts and tyres cost. Parts for some classic cars can be expensive and hard to get hold of.

Visit a classic car show to see the car you think you want at close quarters. If possible try the car out, sit in it and ask yourself if it is comfortable for you and big enough for your needs.

Classic cars need lots of specialist care, so now you must find out if there is a garage near you that can help you with this care and get you the parts you will need. At this stage owners clubs can be invaluable they maintain lists of garages and workshops and can tell you how easy it is to source parts.

By now you will have decided on which car you want to buy, now it is time to find your dream car. You can find it using a combination of sources, start by searching on-line or by contacting the owners club to see if any are for sale. You will also find classic cars for sale in local newspapers, at auctions, in garages, at classic car shows and on eBay.

Once you have found the car that you want to buy go to see it. Take a mechanic with you. Before you go brief the mechanic about common problems with the car, so that they can look out for signs of these specific problems.
