Home Care Helps Seniors Connect Online With Family
Share: Home care experts are seeing a growing trend in long-distance relationships among extended families
. More and more, children are moving away and raising families in another state or even abroad, far from their hometowns, parents and grandparents. For these families, daily communication may present challenges, but thanks to the increasing availability of technology, keeping the lines of communication open is getting easier. According to a 2012 study published by Microsoft and AARP entitled Connecting Generations, a growing number of people across generations are using the Internet to communicate with family.
The study explains that more than 80% of all individuals surveyed (ages 12-75) claimed that going online was a "helpful" form of communication with family. More than 65% of teenagers felt that communicating online improved the quantity and quality of time spent with family, and almost 60% of adults ages 39 and over agreed. Statistics like these show that the Internet truly is helping bring families together, and can be a quality way for children, parents, and grandparents to stay in touch.
Common Technology Concerns among Seniors
Although today's younger generation seems to possess an innate ability to use technology, some older individuals may find it more difficult. Common reasons for this include:
Share: -Vision impairments (it is difficult to read the small print and screen)
-Difficulty typing due to arthritis or other joint/muscle conditions
-Lack of education on how to use popular programs and applications
-Lack of equipment (do not own a computer, notebook, smartphone or other device)
Luckily, many of these obstacles are easily overcome if the individual is willing. Seniors can ask family members or close friends to help them read and/or type e-mails. They can also attend a community education course that provides basic skills or information about how to use a computer and communicate online, or can have a friend give a quick tutorial at home. Many new applications make it easy to compose e-mails, share photos or view online blogs and work with simple, inexpensive computers or personal electronic devices.
Elderly Care Helps Seniors Reach Out
Elderly care providers can also help clients communicate with family. Professional caregivers are happy to assist elderly care clients by writing letters or typing e-mails to their family members.
Home care services such as those provided by ComForcare Home Care support individuals who do not live near family. Available on a part-time or full-time basis, these services assist those who wish to maintain their independence in the convenience and comfort of their own home. For family members who live far away and are unable to provide caregiving services, professional home care providers close the gap with dependable and compassionate home care services that give families peace of mind.
