A city with industry at its heart
The principal cultural and economic centre of Wallonia, the French-speaking part of Belgium, Liege was formerly part of the Sillon Industriel, the Belgian industrial centre. With the third largest river port in Europe, and connected to Germany, Antwerp and Rotterdam by the Albert Canal and Meusse River, Liege became an important industrial centre in the early 19th century. The centre of the European iron and steel industry, the city's Seraing industrial complex was once the biggest in the world.
Heavy industry is still important to Liege's economy today. There are a number of steelmaking sites on the outskirts, and the city is also the headquarters for the arms manufacturer FN Herstal (Liege has been a centre for gunsmithing for centuries). However, in modern times the economy has diversified, embracing technologies like spacecraft propulsion systems; aircraft engines; information technology; biotechnology and the manufacturing of beer and foodstuffs. Entrepreneurism keeps the city mobile, and a science park near the University of Lige houses a number of technology companies.
