Green Pan Review
The latest and greatest in nonstick cookware are the so called "green pans"
. Why green? The idea is that these pans are "eco friendly" having no PTFE or PFOA in the construction of the pans. Although it has not been proven that these compounds transfer from the pan to the foods we eat, the mere use of these materials in the manufacturing of the cookware, might help contaminate the environment. For instance PFOA, or perfluorooctanoic acid, which is a processing agent, has been detected in water, food, wildlife, and human blood samples. The Environmental Protection Agency has encouraged cookware companies to stop using this agent by 2015 because there is evidence that these compounds cause birth defects in laboratory animals.
Such is the hype about these pans that many foodies and cooks are buying them but the question remains are nonstick green pans good at all?
First we need to take a look at the nonstick finish: green pans come in two different finishes: ceramic and silicone.
Ceramic coatings are made of the same materials used to make glass and pottery. They are environmentally friendly and safe on foods and will not harm pet birds. The problem with ceramic coatings is that they are brittle and if you overheat the pan (which is easily done) the coating breaks down and it can even bubble and crack!Another problem with ceramic coatings is that even if you are careful and follow the manufacturer's instructions such as not overheating and washing by hand they break down faster than you think. Unfortunately many users are complaining that this ceramic coating although great when the pans are new do not last a lot of uses and washings (even by hand) so the pans are not as durable as we might want them to be.
When choosing between green nonstick pans and conventional nonstick, you will have to compromise in quality if you want to stay in the same price range as conventional nonstsick.
The bottom line is, if you want a green pan that will keep its gliding quality, after several uses and washes, you are going to have to come up with the cash because the best is green pan is made by a Belgian cookware company and their pans are not cheap.
