Get Your Children Involved in Training Your Dog

The responsibility of dog training normally falls on the adults in a family

, as they are the disciplinarians in most households. Having said that, it is a good idea to encourage your children to pitch in and help you train your dog.

Dogs by nature are frisky and need to be trained on how to behave with family members. In caring for their pet, your children will learn a valuable lesson in patience. They will learn to coax your dog into obeying instructions without being harsh. Your pet's gradual response will build self-confidence in them.

Teach your kid not to beat your dog or use physical force to get your dog to obey. The trick is to use a more subtle dog training method such as clicker training techniques. Children can get dogs to do their bidding more easily if they offer some kind of reward or treat for good behavior and obedience. In fact, this is by far the best and most proven method to successfully train a dog.

Depending on the age of your kids, allocate suitable responsibilities such as grooming, feeding or training your dog. For instance, children under ten will initially need a little help and direction from you to do their bit everyday. Keep an eye on whether your kids are finishing allocated tasks regularly and ensure that your dog's well-being is not jeopardized. Make sure they finish their duties before running off to play. While it is alright to use dog training as an opportunity to teach your children a little responsibility, be judicious in doling out duties.

Introduce your dog to new lessons before asking your children to help out. This way your dog will be familiar with the process and respond better to your kids' instructions. This will also prevent your kids from getting frustrated or giving up on the training.

The best way to start off is to make the kids observe how you are training the dog. Once they get the idea, they can begin training with you watching and giving directions from the sidelines. Initial supervision is necessary to make sure they focus on what they are doing.
