How It WorksThe sun is our planet's largest natural energy source. The earth stores about 47% of the solar energy that enters the atmosphere. Thus, the question is: How can we get this energy out of the ground and use it in our homes? The simple transfer of heat is the answer. When you put a steaming hot slice of pizza in the refrigerator, the cool air inside takes away the heat of the food. Geothermal heating and cooling (also known and geoexchange) works the same way. The transfer of energy is done by a refrigeration system that acts as a converter, moving the energy in the Earth and forming heat for your home. This process can also provide houses with free hot water and excellent dehumidification.
So how does it work? A closed loop (usually piping) with water running through it is buried in the ground. The water running through the loop becomes warm through the transfer of energy from the heat in the ground. It is than brought to a heat exchanger, which converts the energy from the water into warm air. Finally, a fan at the bottom of the heating unit pushes this warm air through ducts all throughout the house. Conventional heating systems take cold air from outside and exert energy transforming it into warm air. Geothermal systems take the heat that is already stored in the ground, which is what makes it a more efficient process. Fewer moving parts and less energy exertion will result in a cheaper, more effective way to heat your home.
The heating systems in geothermal houses use 25% to 50% less electricity than traditional heating techniques. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, geothermal heating pumps can conserve up to 44% more energy than air-source heat pumps and 72% more than electric heating units.
Geothermal houses are an example of the future of our planet. Finding inexpensive, environmentally friendly ways to conserve energy is the first step in going green. Be it wind power, solar power, or in this case, geothermal power, the use of alternative energy will lead to a cleaner, safer planet.
