From Early Beano To Online Bingo
Online bingo is a recent phenomenon when you consider the game's origins.
Bingo as we know it today originated in Italy in 1530 with the game 'Lo Giuoco del Lotto D'Italia', the Italian lottery, which is still played in Italy today.
It didn't really come into its own and evolve to the bingo we now know until it reached the United States, where it was christened beano. A toy salesman, Edwin S. Lowe, spotted the potential of early beano at a carnival, and hired a top maths professor to devise thousands of different card combinations. Six thousand were devised, and it's been reported that the poor mathematician that did the work ended up going insane!
Lowe re-named the game Bingo after hearing a player call this word out by accident, as he thought it had a better ring to it.
The game still didn't really take off until a Catholic priest came up with the idea of using bingo to raise funds for the church, which turned out to be a clever move, with thousands of games being played every week.
For the latter half of the 20th century, Bingo was largely played in bingo halls, and the stereotypical customer demographic was old aged pensioners, predominantly female. During the 1990s, however, a campaign began by the bingo industry to revamp bingo's image, and make it appeal to a younger clientele.
This was quite successful, and it became more acceptable for groups of younger women to attend a bingo session, but it wasn't really until the widespread use of the internet that bingo really took off in a new way - online.
Ease of play meant that people could now play online Bingo from the comfort of their own homes, or even at work while sat at their computers.
Now there are hundreds of online Bingo sites in the UK, all offering competing and tempting deals for signing up with them.
