Finding the Perfect Space Maintainers for Your Child
Space maintainers are a customized appliance that is made up of acrylic or metal material. A dentist or orthodontist designs the space maintainers so it can keep the spaces of your child's mouth open for the eruption of the permanent tooth to come into place. It helps guide the proper positioning of the permanent teeth resulting to a well structured teeth.
There are two types of space maintainers namely:
Removable Space Containers
They uses artificial tooth which will serve as filler while your child waits the eruption of the new permanent tooth. It is made up of acrylic and is very similar to orthodontic appliances used by dentists in their laboratories.
Types of Fixed Space Container
There are four types and they are as follows:
Unilateral
This is a type in which is wrapped around outside of the tooth. It has a metal loop which holds the space of the tooth intact and connects it with the space container.
Crown and Loop
This is a type of fixed space container that is in actuality an actual crown which acts as a covering for the tooth. This crown is attached to a loop to guarantee the needed space for the erupting tooth.
Distal Shoe
This is a type of fixed space container installed by inserting a metal directly to the gum line. In doing so, the open space is assured not to close while the dentist keeps a record of the erupting permanent molar. This is often used only for the molars of the mouth.
Lingual
This type can be installed in two ways. You can either have this cemented to the molar teeth or connect it to the lower front teeth using a wire. This installation is done for individuals who have more than one missing tooth.
