Weight Loss For Healthy Living:

Fifteen years ago I weighed 340 pounds and had been dieting half my life, losing the same 100 pounds over and over again. I was not so much living as existing, and knew 1 was eating myself to death. I lost the weight 1 needed to lose and kept it off permanently not by dieting. 1 have a food plan called 301 three meals a day, nothing in between, and one day at a time and 1 follow a program that requires me to make major changes not so much in my eating habits as in my attitudes and my behavior. Although I will remain a food addict until the day 1 die, I am no longer a prisoner of my body, and that has liberated my mind from obsession and allowed me to create a full, rich, and happy life for myself. You can, too.

You are probably still uncomfortable with the term "food addict." When 1 use the word "addiction," I mean the continued use of a mood-altering substance in spite of the negative consequences, coupled with a greatly diminished capacity to exercise free will over its use. Addiction is characterized by overdoing, in spite of lost health, jobs, relationships, and status. If there are no negative consequences to your behavior in relation to food, and if there is no disparity between your need to control your intake of food and your ability to do so, then you aren't an addict. If there is, I hope you will keep an open mind and consider the fact that you might be.

Another helpful definition of addiction comes from the Big Article of Alcoholics Anonymous: "a mental obsession coupled with a physical compulsion." Food addicts are constantly thinking about food and cannot stop eating once they start. That's the double whammy of the addiction; not only do your thoughts propel you to eat, physical changes take place when you eat that cause you to keep eating without the ability to stop when you're no longer hungry. An alcoholic can never understand how a person can sit and nurse one drink all night. A food addict can never understand how a person can cut a sliver out of a cake and not wind up eating the whole thing. And when that cake is gone, the food addict experiences no satisfaction, only disgust and shame. I relate that feeling to a cat's making love to a skunk: I didn't have all I wanted, but I had about all I could stand.

Because it is the earliest addiction, food is very often the primary one. Many alcoholics manage to stop drinking only to be confronted with their addiction to food in their recovery. It is also the most common addiction. More people die from it each year than all the other addictions combined, yet there's rarely an emphasis put on food as a potentially lethal substance. There are no labels on bakery trucks or photos of seven-layer cakes in magazines that announce, "Warning: Consumption may be dangerous to your health." Nor is there much social stigma attached to food addiction. Eating too much is generally considered a joke, but 1 didn't laugh at the sign I recently saw on the wall of a New York restaurant:
