Dressing up games are fun for all kids. Maybe they just walk around in their mum's shoes or their dad's boots but perhaps they might sometimes design costumes or outfits based on their active imaginations. Sometimes however they might ask for your help in coming up with some fancy dress outfits for a party or other event. There are undoubtedly lots of toy shops and online retailers selling very attractive outfits for little princesses, or for little soldiers, policemen and pirates. Nevertheless often the main fun of fancy dress is using your imagination: coming up with a good outfit based on stuff you already have around the home. This article will show some easy and cheap ways to encourage your child's imagination and craft skills by making a robot outfit. As an adult you can probably make or buy an outfit which is much better than your child could make for himself or herself. However, with your help and advice, you can stimulate your child's imagination by helping them to design and make their own special outfit. All children except perhaps the really young should be able to put together this simple robot outfit. Two cardboard boxes are needed. You need a small one for the head, and a larger one for the body. Tell your child how you are going to work together to make the outfit. You could ask them to do a drawing to show what they want it to look like when its finished. You will need to find some cardboard boxes. One needs to be big enough to fit the child's body. The smaller one is for his head. The parent should now take the large box and cut off the two small flaps. Now cut arm holes in the remaining flaps. The child can now push their arms through the holes so that the box sits in from of their body. Take the smaller box and cut eye and mouth holes. Now you need you child to help you with the painting. Ask the child what color they want for their robot. Grey seems a sort of normal color for a robot, but if your child wants a pink robot then that's fine too. Make sure you have enough paint to finish before you start. If want a shiny robot instead of a painted one then you could cover it with kitchen foil. Stick this on with PVA glue (white glue). This will give your robot a nice metallic appearance.A robot should have some buttons or switches on the front. You and your child should find something suitable around the house. You could make shiny buttons out of sweet wrappers. Or, if you've made a shiny robot using kitchen foil then you could make the buttons and switches out of bottle tops. If you've ever watched a James Bond film you should know to add a large red button labeled "Self Destruct".Another decoration idea is to fit a TV screen onto the robots tummy. You can cut a TV shaped hole in the right place. Now get your child to draw a picture on card of whatever they want on the TV. They could also cut pictures of cartoon characters out of a magazine and stick them onto the card. Stick the card behind the TV shaped hole and your robot now sports a TV screen on his tummy.
