It is best to have a way to measure the time so that you don't skip out on valuable minutes each day. Minutes a day is really such a small fraction of your day. It can save you hours in the dentist's office later.
Don't brush your teeth too hard. This only leads to gum bleeding. Over brushing causes serious gum issues. Consistency is the key to stopping plaque buildup. A moderate brushing twice a day will sufficient. If you brush too aggressively you will end up with gums that recede and become sensitive to brush.
