FAIR TRADE ON UGANDAN ART
Share: "Uganda takes its name from the Buganda kingdom
, which encompassed a portion of the south of the country including the capital Kampala. Fifty-one percent of the population of the country lives slightly below the international poverty line of US $1.25 a day. It is currently subject to a severe food crisis."
It's obvious that more than half of Uganda's population is poor. Due to their political problems and social upheaval, Ugandans are still struggling today for survival. Fair trade is running low and the hunger rate is surging high. Because of this, many Ugandans die each year because of malnutrition. Not only that, they lack the capacity of providing themselves of shelter and education.
On the other hand, with this kind of depression, Ugandans are known for their rich culture. Their traditions and way of living is intriguing and at the same time captivating. No one ever knows where their smiles come from amidst the poverty they are in.
Even though they're in the middle of a crisis, the best way to interpret their happiness is through their art. Uganda has produced a host of great Ugandan artists in the recent generations and their art is undoubtedly outstanding. From paintings, wood carvings and pottery, their art tells a lot about their culture and it is by far one of the things that keep these people smiling.
Aside from their creativity, this might be a way to help them with their financial problems. Their art constitutes one of the most diverse legacies on earth. Their art form involves a lot of vibrant colors and ethnicity that can brighten up one's space. This is why there are many who are supporting it. People are searching for those kinds of art work. The only glitch is, it's not that stretched in the trade industry that's why it's hard to find.
This led me to the idea to offer photo prints taken from woodcuts, batiks, screen prints, pottery and paintings that are produced by the finest Ugandan artists (all in private collections). It will be in one website that will require membership and a user login and password. We will consider selling the rights to agents only.
If this pursues, not only will you earn yourself an artwork, you've made an Ugandan happy. Another idea from
