The ruins of the ancient city, Machu Picchu, are located 2,430 feet above sea level. Its elaborate series of terraces arouse the curiosity of everyone about the sophistication of those long ago builders. It was an amazing achievement and traces of their accomplishments are evident in the ruins.
People in the area live a lifestyle similar to that of those ancient Inca tribes. They farm the land, growing potatoes and maize. They raise the llamas that are indigenous to the area. Many endangered species make their home in the area. This includes the spectacled bear, the ocelot and the dwarf brocket. Otter and other wildlife roam the mountains. Cuzco and other local villages show traces of the Inca architects who constructed Machu Picchu in the Peruvian Andes.
Hiking isolated mountain trails is an outdoor activity for strong and rugged individuals. Narrow trails wind through the rain forest on the Brazilian Green Coast. Trekkers see brightly colored parrots, birds of other species and small animals that live in the hot, humid environment. Vistas of beauty are all around, from the Andes Mountains in Peru to the pristine beaches of the coast. There are volcanic landscapes in Ecuador and a canopy of trees in the rain forest.
