Trust in Experience

Trust in Experience

It's very possible, for those interested in modeling or acting, to come across an agency who will try and catch you up in some sort of scam. You put your aspirations out there, and they ask for money with no intention of finding you work. It's more common than you think. But if you're smart and careful, you can figure out who to trust and who to avoid.

Real agencies are fully licensed and have a client list full of names you know. If it's a big company that trusts the agency, you might be able to as well. This is also the time to get your model composites made. These are your business cards, and while it'll cost you to get them made, they're necessary for the agency to find you work. And since the agency can help you with the composites, it'll be one of your first professional dealings with that agency, so pay attention.

I'm not trying to sound like your parents, but there it is: Apply yourself, kid, and you'll be better served than anyone working less hard than you.

Now comes the part where you sit down with your agency and discuss your options. Is it going to be print work, commercials, or runway action? Will you try your hand at music videos? Do you want to make your splash as the one who tried to get away with it in the next crime drama? There's always room for one more hero or villain. Or plucky kid. Or wise grandma. Or ...

Don't Have an Exotic Face?

The thing about talent agencies is: they're not always looking for that exotic face. They want real people, everyday people, of all ages and experience levels, to send to casting directors. Because who knows what the right face is? Chances are it's one you see out on the streets every morning. Or in the mirror. It's quite a world, isn't it? What with model composites and casting directors and auditions, it's a business unlike any other. And finding a good talent agency is your first step to avoiding scams and finding work in this unique industry. The agency can walk you through all of it, right up to the moment the cameras point your way.
