. Check. Suntan lotion, hat and shades. Check. Smartly conservative clothes for working in. Check. Hang on, did you say working clothes? Well, you can certainly have the best of both worlds if you go to Thailand and do what you love to do from the heart. That of course, is teaching. Teaching English at Thai schools can be a very rewarding experience, especially when the students are fun, polite and very eager to learn the English language.
Thai people are a very friendly nation, and it will also be awesome spending time here teaching as you will not be on your own. You will be able to share your teaching experiences and be in the company of other first language English teachers from around the world who will also be living in Thailand and teaching English at the same time as you.
To be able to teach the English language in Thailand you will need a BA/BS degree and be a national from the UK, Canada, the USA, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia or Ireland. When you arrive in Thailand, you will have to go to a full orientation before you start your teaching. A teaching placement is either for five months or ten months. This orientation is done at a Thailand resort with the other new English teachers just like you who will start teaching the same time as you.
The orientation lasts for three days, and during this time you will get to meet the other teachers and make friends as well as learn all about the Thai culture and their customs, some Thai language basic skills, lesson planning, and dealing with a naughty student! You will probably have about three other native English speaking teachers who will also be working at your school at the same time. There is quite an energetic social scene within Thailand so there will never be time for any boredom.
Once you have started to teach English in Thailand schools, there will be a Thai co-teacher who will be with you in the classroom to help with any translation if the students do not understand something. The size of the classes can also differ quite a lot. Some schools will have a specific English program so the class size will be relatively small, such as up to five students. Other schools though, have no special English programs and classes can have up to fifty students!
Thai schools also enjoy long holidays. These will be in October as well as March through April. This will give you lots of time to visit other thrilling areas of south-eastern Asia such as the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, India, China, Myanmar and Laos. The best way to travel around Thailand is by bus. Trains are an alternative and economical way as well. Thai food is hot and flavourful and totally addictive, and the street vendors will always offer a cheap yet absolutely tasty fill. Western restaurants are always close by if there is a longing for home comfort foods.
