The 21st century metropolis of Kuala Lumpur, commonly known as KL, grew from humble beginnings as a tin mining shanty town to one of Asia's leading "cyber cities". Travellers to Malaysia will often combine a trip to the luxurious hotels of KL with a beach holiday at the resorts of Penang or Langkawi.
KL has a lot to offer though so it shouldn't be disregarded as just a place to lay your head before hitting the tropical beaches of Malaysia's finest seaside resorts. The best way to get acquainted with your surroundings once you have landed is to take a morning tour of the city. Visit some of the city's most famous sites and get yourself orientated so you can go exploring on your own.
Any trip to KL would not be complete without a visit to the Petronas Twin Towers, the world's tallest twin buildings. Take the lift up to the 41st floor and walk across the skybridge that connects the two towers to get a fantastic view of the city. However, for the best view of the city visit the Menara Kuala Lumpur, a communications tower that sits at 421 metres high. The tower has a revolving restaurant and observation deck on the upper floors and the views are breathtaking. Make sure you check events calendars before you go as each year a race is held where participants run up the 2,058 steps to the top.
Share: A nice way to spend your evening in KL is to dine at a palatial Malaysian restaurant where you can watch traditional Malaysian cultural dancers while you eat. Malaysian cuisine has a lot of influences including Chinese, Indian and Thai, but still has very much its own identity. After dinner, take a stroll through the vibrant and colourful Chinatown district and visit the night market for a chance to hone your bartering skills.
Other highlights of KL include a trip to the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park where you can relax in the beautiful lake gardens and admire their collection of around 5,000 birds from more than 50 different species. If you are looking to do a bit of shopping during your Malaysia holidays and want to escape the heat of the markets, visit one of the city's air-conditioned, pristine malls. These large shopping centres are full of designer goods at bargain prices. Finally, if you're feeling fit and healthy, climb the 272 steps to the Batu Caves in the Gombak district. The largest cave is a temple known as Cathedral Cave and has a 100 metre high ceiling and features a number of ornate Hindu shrines. After exploring all these sights you can then make your way to your beach resort knowing you have earned that cocktail by the sea.
