Effective Business Process Improvement Planning

Share: Although there are signs the economy is starting to recover
, your organization still is likely to face months or years of lean budgets. This leaves business owners in a quandary. They can't afford to invest in the company but if they don't keep practicing business process improvement, there won't be a company left once things do get brighter. Executives need to focus on efficient and economical methods to meet business objectives.
Put the Right People in the Right Jobs
When a company is in crisis, politics and personalities have to take a back seat to effective business process improvement. This is a time to make honest appraisals of each person's strengths and weaknesses and match each person with their role in the improvement process. If Susan would make the better process team manager than Larry, then she should be put in charge no matter how many golf games Larry has played with the CEO.
Be careful when judging experience. Business process improvement requires a unique mindset and traditional business analysts may not be able to adapt. An experienced analyst might be passed over in favor of someone with fewer years on the job as long as that time has been spent specifically in the chaotic work of process analysis and improvement.
Emphasize Collaboration
The brainstorming of business process management is a great asset to the practice and any obstacles to collaboration among team member must be solved. This can mean resolving personal conflicts or it can mean using the right software tools to allow team members to work together easily.
This challenge is especially difficult when team members are located all over the world. Despite the ease of global communication, there is nothing like sitting around a conference table hashing out ideas. When this is not possible, managers must evaluate collaboration tools carefully to be sure the tools make the process easier and not harder. Many dedicated business management tools might look good on paper, but users often find them clumsy and not as effective as a simple web-based wiki system.
Be Prepared For Change
It should be obvious but some organizations seem to miss the point that the core of business process improvement is to modify current operations, getting the company out of the rut it is in. There is natural resistance to change and everyone involved from the process improvement team to top executives to minimum wage line workers must understand that things are going to be different and the goal is to make the company more efficient.
When an organization is prepared for the transformations that come with business process improvement, they adapt new methods more quickly and with more enthusiasm. The improvement team might choose to implement process that will show quick results first to demonstrate how effective changes will be, and save more subtle improvements for later in the process when everyone is on board.
