, but 2009 found more of them doing something to fix these 'flaws' in spite of enduring the tougher economic times. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) say UK plastic surgeons performed a grand total of 581 male breast reductions throughout the country in 2009, which is an increase of 80% over 2008. This makes it the third most popular plastic surgery for British men.
Heredity, medical conditions, medications, aging, dieting and obesity cause the embarrassing male breasts to develop. Also called man-boobs or moobs, they are very difficult for men to get rid of and this often leaves them with two options for surgical male breast reduction, referred to by plastic surgeons as gynaecomastia.
The first solution, liposuction, involves having the fatty tissue sucked out through a small incision using special tools. The skin flattens out to leave behind a natural shape with little to no scarring. When this isn't an option, however, plastic surgeons remove the extra skin and tissue by making an incision around the nipple or along the base of the breast.
Regardless of which outpatient technique cosmetic surgeons use, patients will need to wear a special garment during the first few weeks of the recovery period. Patients also noted there was some pain and discomfort associated with these surgeries, but they found it quite manageable with help from some pain medication. They also experienced bruising, aching, and swelling during the recovery, but this disappeared after the first few weeks leaving behind a normal shape and pleasant results.

Gynaecomastia wasn't the only procedure performed more often by UK cosmetic surgeons. Rhinoplasty (nose jobs), blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), breast reduction, otoplasty (corrective ear surgery) and liposuction were the top five procedures for men. Women chose similar procedures with breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, breast reduction, face / neck lift, and tummy tucks being the top five.
UK cosmetic surgeons performed 36,482 procedures in 2009, which equals 6.7% more than in 2008. Not all procedures experienced growth, however. Facelift procedures for women decreased by more than 8% and cosmetic surgeons feel the reason for this was that patients were seeking cheaper options. And, indeed, eyelid surgery, nose jobs, and brow lifts grew by 6%, 25%, and 43% respectively.
