Don't Lose Power This Summer
Share: Every year, during the hottest season - Summer
, power companies use rolling blackouts to make sure their systems do not overload. This allows this to continue providing service to the largest number of people although they have to at times sacrifice outages all across their grid. While it ends up only being a few hours a week or day to ensure the stability of the grid, this means we are without power for hours at a time.
Unfortunately, even with this effort, the grid is not stable. This means that the electricity we use for our homes and offices is not consistent. Also, along with summer come summer storms. Storms, heavy rain, and a long list of other weather related issues can add even more stress to the grid. How can we keep the power companies strategy as well as weather problems keep from costing us money?
Share: Many areas are not capable of sustaining electrical issues such as voltage drops, power surges, and outages. We buy battery backup and surge suppression units for our homes and offices to protect valuable electronics like HDTV's and computers from being affected by fluctuations in the amount and quality of electricity they're being fed. Surge and spike suppressors prevents too much voltage from getting to those electronics by either limiting the amount of electricity that flows through it or by blowing a protective fuse or circuit to prevent those spikes or surges from getting to that TV or computer and blowing it out instead. Battery backups are a good solutions. They can help to prevent surges and spikes in the grid as well as stopping "brown out" situations where the grid doesn't provide enough power. It is known that too much voltage can burn out an electronic device while too little usually does not. Too little voltage can cause damage to motors in our refrigerators and freezers. Unfortunately, the average battery backup is not sufficient support for these units. This means that when we lose power in our home, the refrigerator doesn't keep our food cold, the washing machine can't wash our clothes, and pumps for wells or fish tanks are not running. Thankfully you can replace your milk if it goes bad but it is a little more expensive if you have to replace electronics that have failed.
So, what solutions are available? This is where you find trusted electricians who specialize in these areas. They have years of experience in solving problems such as surges and spikes. They can also help you find ways to support your home and businesses when there are electrical problems. While there are any number of "over the counter" solutions, most of them are merely band-aids, and many of them aren't capable of providing support and protection for more than a few moments at best. The solution is to find an electrical contractor who is able to answer your questions.
