Don't Hesitate To Prevent Injustice
As Martin Luther King Jr. famously stated, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." We see it a lot lately on our televisions, people protesting against suppressive governments that have threatened their rights. Gathering in squares with signs hoping that, collectively, they can bring about change. Our news media is able to capture these peoples' own armies beating them down or arresting the leaders. We view this from the comfort of our living rooms and feel completely powerless. Unfortunately, when politics are involved, many individual liberties are violated, including denying voting rights to the people, rights to freedom of speech or religion are compromised, and protection from punishment flies out the window. When major political systems suppress the voice of their people, others take notice, including activists aiming to prevent injustice.
Share: Even more severe than political injustices are war crimes and crimes against humanity. When a country is at war, there are always those individuals or groups that violate the rules of war according to international law. When individual soldiers engage attack non-combatants or pursue their enemies beyond what is reasonable, they are committing acts of murder. In these cases, national militaries find themselves in a sticky situation and rarely stick their necks out to prevent injustice. Outside governments or human rights activists are usually the first to take notice. Wartime conflict can also lead to even more severe human rights violations, genocide, torture, and even enslavement. These crimes violate and affect all of our most basic rights to life, freedom and physical safety.
For those fighting for the rights of humans in the world, they will continually see injustice happening as long as there is war in the world. But, if no one defends justice, how can justice ever be done? Human rights activists note that in order to truly prevent injustice internationally, we must strive to understand its underlying causes. In most underdeveloped countries, there are victims of economic pressures, societal problems, and international strife. To remedy some of these underlying causes of injustice, it is necessary to develop programs that supply basic assistance for the poor, re-establish relationships between rival communities, and provide understanding and education for all victims. For those peace-building groups working to remedy the wrongdoings of political injustice or wartime injustice, they have a long road ahead of them. Remember what MLK Jr. said, and take a stand whenever you can.
