If you would like the opportunity to explore a more traditional Andalucian city when staying on the Costa del Sol then it is worth arranging a visit to the city of Cadiz. This particular town is located around 2.5 hours from Marbella and is the oldest of all the cities in this part of Spain to have been inhabited.
As there is so much to explore in this town it is worth considering actually arranging to spend the night in one of its many hotels. All of which offer good quality accommodation at what many would consider to be very reasonable prices.
So when visiting Cadiz where should time be spent? Below we take a look at a number of the places to go.
1. Tavira Tower (Torre Tavira) This is the only watchtower that now remains standing in the town and which the merchants would go to in order to see what ships were coming into port. Originally there were more than 160 of these towers dotted along the town's coastline. Within this building is to be found a camera obscura that provides you with spectacular panoramic views of the old part of the town.
2. Admiral's House (Casa del Almirante) It is found beside Plaza San Martin in the Barrio del Populo part of the city. Built in 1690 by the family of the admiral of the Spanish Treasure Fleet from money they had earned through trading with the Americans. This is a very unusual building in that the exterior of it has been sheathed in red and white marble from Genoan.
Although as you wander around this town you will see many strong Moorish influences in the architecture there are still some signs that the Romans chose to base themselves here. One such structure that was found in 1980 was the Roman Theatre.
