There have been countless recalls for a variety of window covering products throughout the years
, but the most persistent issues is cords. Cording on window coverings poses a safety issue to small children who can become entangled in the cords. Consumers are urged to be aware of the safety issue and take it seriously.
1. Look at your window coverings. Regardless of whether they are roman shades or vertical blinds or horizontal blinds...the design or style doesn't matter. Look for exposed and/or accessible cords. This is the major safety concern in relation to small children. (Make sure to check the back of the product as well as the front).
2. If you find exposed cording consider your options. Many manufacturers of all kinds of window treatments (vertical blinds, cell shades, roman shades, horizontal blinds, etc.) have retro-fit kits available that will bring their previously sold products up to current safety standards. Contact the manufacturer to find out if a free kit is available for your product.
3. If it is a viable possibility financially owners and landlords are strongly urged to completely replace older, corded products. Cordless options are available in nearly every style of window covering from vertical blinds to horizontal blinds to roman shades. The cordless products offer the same aesthetic design and the same features and functions of their corded counterparts.
4. Safety can be ensured temporarily by tying down any looping cords. Hold downs are readily available at any hardware store. Another option is to cut them and tie them with a tassel. Never arrange a room so that there is large furniture next to a window. This increases the opportunity for a small child to gain access to the cords of a window covering.
Temporarily fixing the problem is an appropriate measure, but it is only a quick fix. To fully ensure that the problem is taken care of you should contact the Window Covering Safety Council (WCSC). They offer free retro-fit kits to increase blinds safety. If at all possible, homeowners with small children in the home should consider replacing window coverings with cordless varieties to permanently solve the issue of child safety in relation to window treatments.
