Choosing Weekend Breaks In The Country

Choosing Weekend Breaks In The Country

Being a small island can have its disadvantages

, it's true. But on the plus side, the fact that Britain is small means it is not very far to reach some of the nation's treasures on the weekend. Even if you live in a huge city like London or Manchester, there are some seriously exciting possibilities so that you get a change of scenery. In this article we'll look at some top destinations for weekend breaks.

Dartmoor

This moorland has been described as the 'Last Wilderness in England', and for those who've been here, it's easy to understand why. Most of the UK has been given over to either agriculture or accommodation; Dartmoor has not been. It offers people to stand in a landscape that has remained largely unchanged for thousands of years. If you know where to go, you truly can be in places that look the same as when King Arthur reigned; even though he never really did reign at all. As far as weekend breaks go, there are lots of options. Perhaps you'll try a quaint cottage in Chagford or Moretonhampstead from which you'll be able to discover the moors. In terms of natural surroundings, food and friendly locals, Dartmoor is hard to beat.

Yorkshire Moors

The Yorkshire Moors are famous for their sweeping beauty and their proximity to big metropolitan centres. This means a lot of people can reach them and enjoy the fresh air and stunning views. Because it is close to large populations you may find it more challenging to find accommodation than in other areas. It is worth the effort, however, as the Yorkshire Moors can offer some truly energising weekend breaks.

Edinburgh

Of course, you may not live in a city. If you don't, and want to escape to the big bad city, then you may want to consider the Scottish capital, Edinburgh. Edinburgh is one of the UK's most unspoilt cities, offering beautiful Georgian architecture and a friendly atmosphere. The city is of course dominated by Edinburgh Castle, which is connected to the Royal Mile, which itself runs down to Holyrood Palace and the seat of the Scottish Government. The city is ideal when it comes to weekend breaks as it offers a wide range of accommodation, from low to high budget. So whether you're a backpacker or someone with a little more money to spend, Edinburgh might offer the ideal weekend break.

These are just a few destinations you may want to think about when toying with the idea of a weekend break.
