Many young girls love the thought of making their own jewellery, to wear and give to friends. There are many complete kits available to buy, but there are several things to consider.
1 What age range are you buying for. It is very very important when buying any form of jewellery kits for youngsters that beads can be a choking hazard. I would recommend to not buy any for children under four years old, even at this age adult supervision is necessary. Try to not purchase beads under 10mm.
2 Easy to use. At a young age the easier the materials are to create jewellery with the better. Things like cord instead of chain make it a lot easier for young people to work with. Simply using knots to keep beads in place, rather then using tools to attach clasps.
3 Variety. It is always good to have a nice bright range of beads and shapes. Always go for a kit where the beads can easily be mixed and matched to make lovely bracelets and necklaces.
4 Materials. When making jewellery with children I like to use wooden beads, I find that children find them easier to use. The slightly rougher texture gives them more grip.
5 Cost. There really is no need to spend lots of money on jewellery kits for children. There are many reasonably prices kits out there, so a little research goes a long way.
My favourite is the happy hearts kit from Armiga an online gift store selling a wide range of creative gifts. There are over 150 brightly coloured wooden beads in the kit and its a great starter kit for any young budding jewellery maker.
