McAfee Total Protection 2009 buy hereMcAfee is an old hand in the system security and anti-virus game, with its Total Protection 2009 suite the most comprehensive collection of tools the company has available to safeguard you against threats and help take care of your PC.
After a rather long and drawn out installation and a few problems with registering - which you must do before it will load for the first time - we had the thing up and running and first impressions were that not much has changed this year.
The interface presents you with a reassuring green tick if everything looks OK and offers a one-click solution to correct any problems that are detected. Two controls offer quick access to updates and scans but the majority of the security features are accessible through a categorised list that includes computer protection, Internet & Network, Email and IM and Parental Controls.
Each of these is then broken down into individual components with advanced menus available where necessary to offer you more control. While there is an impressive level of tweaking available we weren't overly impressed by the way everything is presented, with seemingly unnecessary collections of additional lists and menus that result in a rather confusing way to control the software.
The firewall is the only component that really warrants this degree of complexity and even this is overly verbose, culminating in a solution that would certainly not be approachable for beginners.
Outside system security you'll find McAfee's Backup and Restore software thrown in, which allows you to save copies of data to local and networked drives. Considering the number of rivals offering online storage we think McAfee missed a trick here. The software is fairly easy to use but loads in its own window and again seems unnecessarily complicated.
Elsewhere McAfee QuickClean allows you to remove junk from your computer and system registry, there's a shortcut to Windows' Defragmenter and a network manager to view the status of computers that have access to the machine the software is installed on.
Total Protection is a fairly comprehensive collection of utilities, but in some cases switching between them involves an overly long wait while the component loads. While most are integrated quite well they all seem to follow the same pattern of being rather awkward to use.
In terms of performance we counted a total of 13 additional processes running behind the software. This uses up a decent chunk of your system memory and takes quite a while to start up after a system boot. Scans are quite fast but have a significant impact on system performance and while anti-virus and anti-spyware detection seems efficient, there are lots of other suites out there that can make similar claims and don't suffer from the issues highlighted above.
Total Protection 2009 does provide you with a lot of flexibility but at the price it's more expensive than most other suites on the market. Considering it feels rather bloated and is certainly not the most approachable for beginners, we were left quite disappointed by McAfee's latest solution to total home security.
