Celebrities On Display: The Train Wreck

I enjoy indulging in a little celebrity gossip as much as the next person

. I read it because sometimes, it's completely mindless and a complete non issue in regards to anything that is actually pertinent in the world. With all the other junk in the media it's a welcomed change of pace. But can someone please explain to me, what is the deal with the heightened publicity celebrities get for just being a live train wreck? And what happens to the minds of those who read this stuff regularly? Instead of reading about behind the scenes drama that's affiliated to a certain celebs actual line of work, you have to read about all of their personal shortcomings in the worst possible way. Not just in magazines, but on television and the internet.

There's Lindsay Lohan in all of her court room and rehab glory, Mel Gibson and his bigoted baby momma drama, George Michael driving drunk again crashes into a house, Fantasia's attempted suicide, Courtney Love's troubled relationship with her daughter, Tiger Woods and Jesse James' many infidelities and apologies, Amy Winehouse is a hot mess as usual, Lawrence Fishbourne's daughter Montana made a porno. Oh and let's not forget the seemingly unstoppable, trashy television show! Think the infamous Speidi, Jersey Shore, The Real Housewives franchise, and Celebrity Rehab.

Is the public really demanding these stories, or are they just being bombarded with them? This isn't even a matter of censorship. I think it's pretty safe to say, that publisher's and networks used to have some class in terms of what they deemed fit for print. Now, they too have entered upon the trash bandwagon. And what's worst, this digital age has made it increasingly difficult for those in the mainstream to really keep their personal lives...well personal. --Wait is that true? I don't see Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Tom Hanks or Denzel Washington in these stories.

Well, that's because none of these stories are definitive of pop culture. Unless, you believe that on a social level, the majority of the population are a bunch of self-destructive, booze and drug soaked criminals. Referring back to my list, I'd argue that only Mel Gibson and Tiger Woods are actual 'stars.' So, I guess I can understand the massive controversy surrounding them. But what about the rest? Child stars, reality stars, and celebutantes with no actual talent! Who really cares about what they are doing with their lives? When I think of the youngest readers and viewers, I think of young women on the street half naked and thirteen year old boys calling girls a 'ho' on myspace! (Yes, they are so young they still use myspace!) It's as if a message is being sent to the youngest generation that the only way they can be interesting is to imitate those whose fame is solely based upon terrible choices. I live two blocks away from a high school, and let's just say, that come 3:30 when school let's out, there are plenty of Lil Wayne's and Snooki's in the making. I seriously, can't for the life of me understand it! Are we sadists, bombarded, or just plain ignorant? That may be a bit harsh, but if you ask me, so are 100 and something pages of BS! Like everything else worthy of mass publicity in the United States, social mantra can be consistently counted on, for overwhelming the scales of negative connotation versus finding anything interesting with a positive connotation. My message to editors, endorsers, producers, and directors who are spending money, and I mean lots of money on trash, "Get a real life, a real job, eat a generous slice of humble pie, and BRAINSTORM!" Not necessarily in that order...of course.
