Window shopping for something on the high street and then making the actual purchase online to save money is not a new trend, as online retailers can almost always offer a better deal than their in-store competitors. However, recently a new wave of internet shopping has become more popular despite suggestions that its leading shoppers to settling for second best: internet opticians. Digital-savvy shoppers have for years been buying cheaper frames online, and then getting prescription lenses put into them by their local optician, as anyone who wears glasses will know that lenses more often than not cost more than the frames. However, now many internet opticians have emerged which allow shoppers to buy both prescription lenses and frames online in one package, saving a lot of money compared to the high street price. Though the most accurate prescriptions for individual shoppers might not always be available at the time, this has not stopped this craze becoming more popular, with several online opticians opening in 2009. For some though, this is more than just a penny-pinching act of frugality; it is a necessity. A family with children who wear glasses can easily incur a costly bill each year, as broken frames, changes in prescription and new styles can contribute greatly to any household allowance. Also, when buying glasses for children it may sometimes make sense to buy cheaper lenses as they cost less to replace, but they also scratch and wear quicker, leading to a somewhat false economy. Whatever a shopper's reason for buying cheaper prescription lenses and glasses online is, there are certainly plenty to choose from, with the usual ranges of sunglasses too for the summer months. Where exactly is the saving coming from if the quality is the same if not better? Well in many cases the 'online optician' is actually more likely the online store of the manufacturer, with a prescriptive service too for added value. In this instance the products come direct from the factory, avoiding costly distribution and retail expenses, which passes the saving onto the customer. Like buying anything else, particularly online, the key is knowing exactly what you want before you click 'purchase'. Although a great range of glasses may be available through online suppliers, and they may be able to meet your prescription requirements, it is still the job of the customer to know what it is they need. Whether you need bifocals, reading glasses, tinted prescriptions or any other type of lenses, do your research beforehand and you too might be able to find what you need at an
