Autumn DrivingAs autumn arrives, we are presented with new hazards as we drive. The leaves have fallen leaving the ground slippery, and shorter days and darker nights pose new problems for drivers.
Ensure that you windscreen is kept clean, as the low sun will cause smears to shine and dazzle you. If you are driving towards the sun, be aware that the drivers behind you ay also have the sun in their eyes and therefore find it difficult to see if you slow. For this reason, always make sure that all your brake lights are working, as if one is out it will be very difficult for them.
Use dipped headlights if the visibility is poor. If you are driving and everyone else has their lights on, put yours on too.
Only use your fog lights in extreme conditions, such as fog. Its really annoying when people use their fog lights as an additional light, as they are there for emergencies.
Remember that your car will take a lot longer to stop on wet surfaces and those with leaves, so adjust your speed and the space you leave behind the car in front to bear this in mind.
Watch out for children, as a lot of school uniforms are dark blue and harder to see in the twilight.
Check that all parts of your car are in good working order; all the lights are working and that the windscreen wipers haven't deteriorated.
