An Online Medical Degree Can Offer More Options Than Ever Before
Share: The new Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act that was instituted in early December likely
caused a good deal of excitement amongst nutritionists and pediatricians everywhere. The bill boosted funding for healthy school lunch initiatives all over the country, mandating that schools adhere to stricter nutritional standards and provide more help to needy children. With this new legislation in mind, and the constantly changing field of nutrition science, those that seek to get involved, or to get more advanced degrees, will find many options through an online medical degree in nutrition science.
It's not just in school cafeterias that many will find nutrition specialists. From nursing homes, to hospitals and private doctor's offices, all different types of nutrition specialists offer their help to people ranging in ages from one month to 100 years old. According to the American Public Health Association, one in every four Americans is obese and childhood obesity is on the rise as well. With these figures in mind, it is no surprise that people are starting to take notice. From reality television shows like The Biggest Loser and federal support to change these figures, it is no surprise that nutrition specialist jobs are on the rise. From entry-level to management, health science colleges are seeing surges in applicants. In addition to ground school applicants, online health science courses are seeing more applicants as well. Usually, they are professionals that are seeking to advance their degree while still maintaining their full-time jobs and managing a busy home life.
Share: While the job growth rate is slightly above the overall growth rate, at 9 percent, more dietitian and nutrition jobs are going to open up by 2018, according to the Occupational Information System. This is due to the fact that more people will open up their own practices and more companies, including schools, will be looking to hire these types of specialists. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), nutritionists earned about $50,590 annually, with the most topping out at over $73,410. Most if not all nutritionists have a bachelor's degree, and those wishing to pursue more managerial-level positions will likely need a master's degree. The majority of US states require a higher education degree, paired with a license to practice, in order to be eligible for a job.
With the ever improving climate of nutrition and medicine, it seems as if a healthier and happier populace will be well on its way. More focus has been on nutrition in children and the rising obesity rates here and abroad. Although many people may find these issues important and want to go back to school to help out children and adults, sometimes finding the time to go to a traditional school is not an option. Online medical degrees provide the flexibility needed for those that wish to pursue different fields, like nutrition science, in order to make a greater impact on their communities.
