Alone and Hating the Holidays

Dear Lauren,

I am always alone on the holidays, and I hate it. I never thought I would be the person who said it, but I hate the holidays.

Alone & Hating the Holidays

Dear Alone & Hating the Holidays,

The holidays can be a mixed blessing. There are high expectations for love, family, and merriment. For people who are alone, bereft, and/or impoverished, it can be difficult to imagine a holiday that is happy or fulfilling. Sometimes people in that position will choose to largely ignore the holiday. Instead, I encourage those who are struggling in this way to to purposefully engage with others. If the holidays are of personal importance to you, which it sounds like they are, then strive to live them as you think is in keeping with their importance.

Many times when we are suffering, we forget that others are suffering as well. I wept because I had no shoes, until I saw a man who had no feet. Finding a way to give to others who are in need is a very rewarding and purposeful way to spend the holidays. Even if you can't find a specific volunteer opportunities, you can visit people in a senior residential home, independently fill lunch bags for homeless, both, or more. Even if you are not practicing a particular faith, consider attending a Christmas service. You may find pleasure in connecting with others around a shared Christmas celebration.

Christmas is not always or even often a Hallmark card. It is real people living real lives embracing, whether they know it or not, God's love, hope, and faith. I assure you that you were not put here to receive, especially on this holiday, but to give. Finding your purpose for the holidays, instead assuming of you have none, will help you through the season.

Best Regards,

Lauren
