All About Cashmere

Wool is the most popular fabric during the winter season

. However wool can be of different types, it can come from different kinds of sheep and in present times one can go for synthetic wool too that a lot of companies these days manufacture. But one variety of wool that is miles ahead from the crowd is cashmere. There was a time when this type of wool was considered so exotic and was so expensive that only select few adorned clothing made out of it. But swift industrialization and rapidly developing global economies have meant that nothing is out of reach now. The word cashmere comes from the Indian state of Kashmir where the goats from which this wool comes from originated. Ancient lore has it that in the 15th century, Kashmirs ruler realized the importance of this wool and invited weavers from neighboring countries to set up a local industry. Later when the Europeans came to India in the 17th century, they realized the immense importance of this wool in the colder climes back home. So they started sending clothing made out of the wool like shawls and sweaters to friends and relatives. The material created ripples in Europe and everyone who wore it became a huge fan. Gradually more and more people started asking their acquaintances in India to send them products made out of this wool. As the demand grew, some enterprising individuals saw a great opportunity and exported these goats to Europe for local manufacturing. Today, the manufacturing of Cashmere is not limited to India. Lot of countries in Asia as well as the US, Australia and a lot of European countries have become major manufacturers too. China is the worlds largest manufacturer and exporter of this wool and India which till a century ago was the leader has now been pushed further down, though it still continues to export significant amounts.

With the growing demand of this wool the world over, a lot of dubious manufacturers have started passing out inferior wool as high quality one. As a result various countries have come out with strict norms. For instance, U.S. Wool Products Labeling Act of 1939 has its own regulations which all manufacturers have to satisfy in order for their product to be certified as a genuine Cashmere.

This wool is extremely light weight and very comfortable to wear. It provides the warmth that no other fabric can match and today is considered to be an important part of the wardrobe. It is expensive as compared to other wool but it lasts for years and has an aura of its own. It is being increasingly used in bedroom furnishings like blankets too.
