A typical holiday in Lapland

The snow falls softly outside, the snow crunches under foot and the children run wildly in this winter wonderland. There are many things to do and see in Lapland and a holiday will be very much enjoyed. As well as the activities just getting out there in the snow with the kids is a joy. Akaslompolo is a small village in Yllas with only a population of about 400 locals and whenever you visit, Yllas is never overly busy. It may be small but Akaslompolo has lots to offer and everything is within walking distance to the hotels and the Lapland Log Cabins. There are many sledges dotted around the resort and it is perfectly normal to just pick one up and pull your kids along. In fact children will love a simple trip down to the supermarket because they get pulled along in a sledge, there are also the kick sledges that lots of people use to get around. Kick sleds are big chairs for one person to sit on whilst the other pushes and then jumps on to the back, they are great fun and get you from one place to another rather quickly. There are also many places in Akaslompolo that you can just simply turn up at without prior booking. Most activities such as the husky dogs and Reindeer rides will need prior arrangement but the wildlife park in the centre of Akaslompolo is a fantastic place you can just turn up to. They have many animals including camels which you can feed and pet and they have a wonderful coffee shop where they do snacks and sell beautiful gifts. The cross country ski tracks are also open every day until about 8pm each night and the equipment can be hired for a small price. Lapp village is another wonderful place where Santa is based and you can just arrive and get involved in some of the fantastic kids activities that are going on. Lapp village is based inside Poro restaurant which does some absolutely fantastic Lapland fare and you can usually turn up and be seated straight away. The ski slopes in Yllas are slightly busier, although if you visit in December you will be amazed how quiet they are. Lessons have to be arranged beforehand to secure your booking and they cater well for all levels of experience and children. Yllas offers some of the best skiing in Finland and offer some of the latest skiing into the season, with skiing available until the middle of May. Yllas is beautiful and is one of those places that remind you of days gone by.
