Helsinki is considered to be a jewel of the Baltic region and offers many tourist attractions that are worth a visit. The harbor is an amazing place to sit and take in the views, but it is also from here that you can shop as vendors sell great traditional souvenirs to visitors from out of the city. If you like you can also embark on one of the ships going to Suomenlinna Island, which is situated not far from the city. On the island you can visit an old Finnish fortress and walk along the picturesque trails.
Those interested in visiting museums there will want to view the Ateneum exhibit which features the work of great Finnish painter, Aleksi Gallen-Kallela; for more on the Finnish culture you can also pay a visit to the National Museum.
You can also attend a concert while in Helsinki if you go to Findlandia Hall. Nearby, you will find the country's parliament building, where tours for tourists are often organized.
If you love travelling back in time, Seurasaari is the place to go. The area offers an outdoor museum and the most gorgeous architecture in the city. Even the churches in the area preserve the atmosphere of a long forgotten age.
A visit to the Mannerheim Museum will show you the story of one of the most famous people in Finland, Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim, a former president and commander of the Finish Army whose contribution the country's independence from Russia is still remembered.
Religious places in Helsinki are usually the Orthodox and Lutheran provenience. Because of the Russian domination, the Orthodox churches share the same style while the Lutheran ones are simpler through comparison.
The Lutheran Cathedral is famous for its concerts. Because of the amazing acoustics the building features the sound of the music played is considered to be out of this world. Another interesting place to visit in Helsinki is Temppeliaukio, an underground church built in a modern format. The building was carved in stone,and the glass dome completes the strange, yet appealing design.
Sibelius monument is one of the city's landmarks you should not miss and even immortalize on film. The country's composer is celebrated through the presence of this monument that combines modern elements with a more traditional style. The pipes that are part of the monument have a practical purpose. When wind blows through the pipes, a strange symphony is heard.
Helsinki may not be as famous as other capitals in Europe, but it still has quite an appeal. Numerous museums, interesting islands, plenty of history, and unique monuments make Helsinki a place worth visiting.
