Tourbillon in French means whirlpool, and it is a kind of mechanic watch equipped with rotary speed adjusting gear.
Tourbillon structure is to rectify errors caused by terrestrial gravity to watches. Tourbillon watch represents the best level among manufacturing crafts of mechanic watches, and the whole speed adjusting gear combines together and works greatly, making it reducing the effects caused by terrestrial gravity to the least, in this way, the time could be more accurate.

The creation of Tourbillon lies in placing the escapement mechanism into a carriage, making the carriage spin round the axe in 360 degrees. The original escapement mechanism was fixed, so it kept the same when the locations of watch changed, as a result, the errors appeared because of different forces got by the escapement parts. However, when the escapement mechanism keeps spinning in 360 degrees, it will combine all errors together and cancel out to eliminate errors. At present, Tourbillon could spin 360 degrees in a minute, which is the most ideal speed.
When a watch is in upright position, its adjustment controls like balance wheel, balance spring and escapement mechanism will appear changes that are difficult to be observed because of the gravity. However, if the adjustment controls are placed in a carriage that could move a circle in a minute, we could get a series of upright locations, in this way, the watch could walk more accurately.
This principle seems very easy, but it is very difficult actually. One of reasons is that the carriage and the weight of Tourbillon could not exceed 0.3g, equal to the weight of a piece of swan feather or the weight of two pieces of parrot feather.
