8 Personal Characteristics Employers Seek In A Job Candidate

Share: Hiring managers and human resources departments are often inundated with hundreds of resumes or applications for each position they've posted
. As the whittling down process then begins to find the most qualified candidates, employers often will look for a certain set of personal traits to help them in the process.
And that's where recruiting agencies can help cut to the chase in saving time and money.
"Our job is to get the best candidates for a position, and quickly, said Omer Mutaqi, Chief Operating Officer of MY HR, a Professional Staffing Services firm headquartered in Stamford, Conn., and a leading consultation provider in maximizing human capital investments. "We know that every client has different needs and different working cultures, but we've found through the years that there's seven very basic personal skill sets that a candidate must possess in order to survive."
Mutaqi notes such qualities are indicators of what kind of person you'll be in a team environment, and offers these eight traits (in no set order):

Employers want to hire professionals who are comfortable with themselves. These professionals know who they are and what they want. They are confident, but calm and never cocky. They are friendly, engaging and a pleasure to be around.
2 Listens & Learn
Employers obviously want to hire professionals who have the skills necessary to do the job. However, that doesn't mean there will never be anything they need to learn. Know-it-alls are rarely appreciated. Humility is.
3 Willingness To Adapt
Some jobs change and evolve day to day. Employers seek to hire adaptable professionals who can change with it. This could mean someone who can follow directions one day, then figure out his or her own direction the next day. Or someone who can spend some days behind their desk and other days in the field, equally productive and adaptable in both arenas.
4 Flexible
Those stuck in their ways tend to be more difficult to work with than those who can go with the flow. Flexibility goes hand in hand with adaptability. And older workers in the job market need to be particularly aware of this.
5 Self-Reliant
Employers don't want to hire people who require hand holding or constant praise in order to be productive. They're instead looking for employees who can motivate themselves, figure out what needs to be done and then do it. Sure, we all appreciate being noticed for good work, but it shouldn't be required at all times.
6 Team Player
We all no the phrase "there's no I' in team.'" And it's so true in a work environment. Employers are looking for those who can collaborate well with others, not solo renegades.
7 Dependable
Employers want employees who will be there to do the job every day. They don't want to waste their time with someone who is going to use all of his or her sick days, demand vacation time during the busy season, or abuse a flexible schedule.
8 Honest

Share: OK, perhaps this is the most important tenet. If an employer discovers an "inaccuracy" or "exaggeration" on your resume (perhaps while conducting a reference check), you will quickly find yourself continuing your job search. Be honest, and you've got nothing to hide or cover up or keep track of.
Mutaqi advises all job candidates to conduct an honest self-assessment of themselves with these eight traits in mind.
"Awareness of these qualities aid in any job search, no matter the position," he added.
