Quite an Experience in Amish Country Indiana by:Sean Hess

Anyone who is not from the Midwestern United States probably has not seen a lot of Amish country citizens. In fact, a pal of mine from Australia recently told me that Amish citizens are more legendary than factual where she’s from; they’re like leprechauns or unicorns. Not so in the state of Indiana! The Legend of Atlantic City's Boardwalk by:David Kaleky

The Atlantic City Boardwalk has a wide and varied history. The areas first population went there because it offered good food in a comfortable and friendly atmosphere. This sounds a great deal like the area today, but it took place before the 1600's. The visitors were the Lenni-Lenapes Indians. They traveled a trail that led from the mainland to "summer" on Absecon Island, the home of Atlantic City. Today the trail would be where Florida Ave is located. It was at least five miles over the marsh but it led them to the bay waters and abundant wildlife the island offered. Even though Thomas Budd was the first owner of the land, he wasn't the first to build a permanent structure on it. Budd received the land as a settlement. Then, while the mainland property had the high value if forty cents an acre, due to the potential of farming, the seashore beachfront was valued at a mere four cents an acre since it was relatively useless for anything. This took place in the 1670's but there were no permanent buildings on the island until Jeremiah Leads built his log cabin in 1785. The family continued to live on the island and at his death in 1837, his second wife Millicent built a boarding house...more

Well, here you are, keys in hand, standing at the door of the brand new country home you have always dreamed about. You are envisioning family and friends on your porch, grilling and enjoying the quiet freedom of country property. The stars shine brighter, the air is cleaner, and the solitude of multiple acres affords you the happy calm you long for while enduring a cacophony of constant city noise. What you may not have considered (or are avoiding considering) is the upkeep of your new home. Since most of us would rather spend money on some "toys" (read: recreational vehicles, horses, etc) for the new property than pay someone to come in and do maintenance, and letting that peculiar second cousin stay there in exchange for work defeats the relaxing environment you set out to cultivate, you will have to do some maintenance yourself. Here are some quick tips to keep maintenance from taking away too much from your full-time second home job: relaxation.1.Run through a checklist before you leave the property, every time. This will cut down on frustrating trips back out to the property to turn off the air conditioning. Below is a sample list to get you started:a.Turn off the power. If...more
