Work: the World in Photographs. A Review

Work: the World in Photographs / Ferdinand Protzman (National Geographic

, 2006) Hardcover, 192 p. ISBN 9780792262046

As the title indicates, Work: the World in Photographs documents work from all over the world. Not only that, the 190 photographs span considerably more than a century, from the beginning of photography into the twenty-first century. The need to work is universal. The kinds of work people do vary greatly, especially from society to society and over such a long span of time.

Remember the saying, "I love work. I could watch it for hours!" Work: the World in Photographs shows men, women, and children going about their daily routines, working at whatever it was they did: office work, construction work, farming, diamond mining, shining shoes, tanning leather, snake charming, even begging. Some jobs no longer exist, while others are so recent many readers may not know about them. The scenes vary considerably, too: office cube farms, city streets, out in the rain, in a desert, even men on stilts in a body of water.

Some pictures are in black and white, but most are in color, taken by some eighty professional photographers, most but not all affiliated with National Geographic. Therefore, the pictures in Work: the World in Photographs are not mundane images of mundane activity. The work may be mundane or glamorous, but the photography very powerfully captures not only the work and its setting, but also the dignity of the workers, and quite often scenic beauty as well.

Ferdinand Protzman, author of other National Geographic books of photographs, has selected each of these photos, placed them in their sequence, and written very helpful explanatory comments. Not as big as many other coffee table books, Work: the World in Photographs nevertheless provides all the beauty and reliable information we have come to expect from National Geographic.
