. Though it's been in theaters for only 5 years, the show has been seen by nearly 2 million people.
The musical is based on Gregory Maguire's bestselling novel also titled Wicked The puts an unexpected twist on the famous Wizard of Oz story.
The musical starts way before Dorothy and Toto come to Oz. Wicked tells the story of the relationship between Elphaba and Glinda, the wicked witch of the west and the good witch of the North. Wicked is a tale of intrigue focusing on all the elements of great romances, disagreements, family intrigue, and even a little love triangle. The plot recalls elements of the 1939 Wizard of Oz film and recounts Elphaba's fall from grace.
The story begins where Baum's story ends, just as the Wicked Witch of the West has melted after having been doused with water When the good Witch of the North arrives the citizens ask her if she knew the Wicked Witch once upon a time. She doesn't want to admit it, but eventually begins to tell the story of how she met Elphaba.
The scene changes, as Glinda begins to recall the past. It is revealed that Elphaba's mother is cheating on her husband. Her actions result in a child, whom she names Elphaba. Perhaps as a result of the liquid that Melena was given by the man she was cheating with, Elphaba is born an unnatural green color. Frex, Melena's husband, is ashamed of his daughter.
Elphaba's mother eventually gives birth to another girl named Nessarose, who is born crippled. Frex, who never got over his embarrassment of Elphaba, adores Nessarose. When Nessa is old enough, Frex sends her to Shiz University. He also sends Elphaba, although she goes as a mere attendant. And as a parting gift, Frex gives Nessarose a pair of slippers.
After arriving at the University, Elphaba's surprised by how quickly her plans change. When Elphaba accidentally uses her magic, Madame Morrible, headmistress of Shiz grows fascinated with the girl. She asks Elphaba to join the school's magic curriculum. In addition, while Elphaba had expected to be staying with her sister, she ends up rooming with Galinda, a stuck up, bratty, rich witch. The two of them despise each other.
Elphaba loves her classes, although she encounters problems. Dr. Dillamond, her favorite professor, who is also talking animal, discusses a strange occurrence happening throughout Oz. All the animals are forgetting how to speak. This news is incredibly troubling to Elphaba although she feels helpless. When Dillamond is kicked out of Shiz because he is a talking animal, all of that changes. The first action of the Professor who takes Dillamond's spot, causes Elphaba to spring to action when he traps a lion in a cage. She rescues the lion, and vows to make it her life's goal to protect all of the animals of Oz.
After that occurs, the Wizard of Oz summons both Elphaba and Galinda who have since become friends. Galinda, at this time, changes her name to Glinda. After meeting him, though, Elphaba realizes that he is incapable of doing anything by himself. She becomes disillusioned, and escapes from the Wizard on a broomstick.
Around Oz, rumors are running rampant that Elphaba can be melted by having water poured on hera rumor that infuriates Fiyero (Glinda's fiance and Elphaba's secret admirer). Fiyero hears the rumor and leaves to find Elphaba. In the end, he leaves his beautiful Glinda for the misunderstood but wonderfully good hearted Elphaba, which hurts Glinda deeply.
It isn't long before Elphaba has to leave Fiyero, however. Elphaba gets wind that her sister might be in trouble. She leaves Fiyero right away, only to find that her sister has been killed by a house landing on her. This marks the arrival of Dorothy and her dog Toto. Elphaba is made furious when Dorothy steals the slippers (given by Frex to his daughter in the first act) right off of Nessa's feet.
In the end, Elphaba and Glinda met for a final goodbye. After a wonderful little song, the famous last scene from the movie is played out. Water is thrown on the so-called Wicked Witch of the West, and she is supposed dead. Though it is revealed that she had only fallen through a trap door. She runs away to find Fiyero, and away they go to live happily ever after.
