What makes a budget hotel?
Going away for a cheap weekend break doesn't have to mean settling for second best when it comes to your accommodation
. With many last minute deals available, as well as discount rates for those who book ahead, it can be easier to find budget hotels than you might think.
Price isn't the only thing you should look for in a hotel of course - it's most important that you get good value for money. Everything from the hotel's location to dining options offered by its restaurant and room service can determine the real cost of your break, and need to be looked into with due care before booking your room, especially if you're travelling with children.
You might need more from your hotel than just a bed and breakfast too, especially in today's information age where being connected around the clock is often a priority. Check whether your hotel offers amenities such as internet access or laundry services, if these are important for your stay, and whether there is sufficient entertainment to keep the little ones out of trouble - from digital television channels to play areas or local parks.
If you're heading to the city for your
cheap weekend breaks, don't assume city centre hotels will be more expensive by default just because of the convenience they offer. Many large hotel chains operate properties in city centres with rates well suited to budget travellers, and could also offer discounts when you book online.
Similarly, if you're hoping to enjoy a relaxing weekend break away from the crowds, you might prefer a hotel in the countryside or along the coast to keep noise to a minimum and avoid the hustle and bustle of commuters. It's usually unwise to choose hotels in bad neighbourhoods just because the rates are cheap - there are often reasons for the low price, such as noise that could prevent you from getting a good night's sleep.
If you're a really money-savvy traveller you should consider taking your breaks out of season to get the best deals, as hotels and airlines tend to jack up their prices during busy holiday seasons. In quieter periods, you'll often find hotels are eager to fill up all those empty rooms with paying guests, so you could find lots of last minute deals to save you money that can be spent doing things you love on your budget weekend break.
