The surfing session starts with the user firing up his favorite browser. Usually, he finds himself staring at the default home page of the browser. Depending on what the user is looking for, he will type in some keywords in the search engines (Yahoo also has a search function on the homepage). Based on the keywords, the search engines will then return a set of search results. These results are supposed to be the most relevant results (relevant to the keywords).
The user then selects the link that he believes to be the most relevant and clicks on the link. He then ends up on a website.
So what does the above information has to do with Internet marketing?
Well, you now know that search traffic is based on keywords. If you want highly targeted traffic from the search engines, you have to focus on keywords. In other words, keyword research should be a big part of your Internet marketing plans. If you neglect keyword research, you could be generating content that nobody will ever read. Nobody visits your website because your site doesn't appear in the search results whenever someone conducts a search in the search engines.
How do you perform keyword research?
There are various tools out there that may help you. One of the most commonly known tool is Keyword Tracker. This is a tool that is built specifically for Internet marketers. Using this tool, you can key in your primary keywords, and the tool will give you a list of suggested keywords. The best part is, there is an estimated search volume beside each suggested keyword. That way, you know which keywords will bring you the most traffic.
And what do you do with all that information?
You start building content around those keywords. For instance, if you are selling gardening tools, you may wish to write about "flower pots", "clay pots", "gardening fertilizers", etc. These are all relevant keywords. If someone uses one of these keywords to make a search, you can be sure that the individual is interested in what you have to sell or offer on your site.
The more keywords you have on your site, the more traffic you will receive. It takes time to build up all that content but organic search traffic is a long term traffic source. There is a cumulative effect. The more time you spend on generating keyword based content, the higher the level of traffic you will receive.
