Ways To Soundproof A Room

Ways To Soundproof A Room

In this modern age, there are just so many products being introduced in the market to solve peoples problems

. Good enough as people can now enjoy more convenience in their lives. When it comes to noise control and reduction, numerous materials are now available to help occupants of a home or commercial building enjoy a quiet atmosphere inside the place they live and work every day.

Soundproofing rooms is important for many families and businesses who value a quiet place. This can be achieved using various types of acoustical panels. These panels are normally installed in the different parts of the room most especially the floors, walls and ceilings. Depending on the level of noise control desired, there are thin and thick soundproofing materials that can be used.

Compared to the traditional materials such as the fiberglass, spray foams, double walls and stud walls, the new technologies are considered to be more effective in controlling and reducing sound and are even cheaper. Some of the latest materials available today for soundproofing purposes are the thick foam, cotton batting, soundproofing quilt and mass loaded vinyl or MLV. These can be installed through a do-it-yourself project if you know how or through a professional installer.

A common method of soundproofing ceilings, walls and floors today is by installing a mass underneath the structures. This mass can be of various materials depending on your preference.

Soundproofing ceilings

If you think sound from the outside can enter through your ceiling, you can add a sound reducing insulation in the attic space. There, you can install four inches of acoustic insulation material between the ceiling tile and hard ceiling.

For a suspended ceiling, attach the material to the ceiling joists with roofing nails that have plastic disc washers. Make sure to cover all seams to ensure that noise does not get through.

Soundproofing walls

For the walls, you can install acoustic sound panels according to your specific size. Normally, installation only involves rolling out the material (for cotton batting and quilt) and attaching it to the wall studs. After hanging, a drywall should be placed above to complete. Not only will your wall be soundproof but it will also be properly insulated.

Soundproofing floors

For the floors, measure the size and cut the material to fit the flooring. Lay it out before installing your main flooring. If you have a wooden floor, install the material on your subflooring using staples and nails to make the material stay in its place. For concrete floors, use contact cement to secure the material. Ensure that you cover from wall to wall starting at one side of the room. Another way is to roll out the material from one side of the room at the wall portion up to the other wall across and then cutting it to make sure that it fits snugly.

If you want to install it under your carpet, you need to put plywood on top of the material. You can then reinstall the carpet padding and the carpet. Other than soundproofing, the material will also be able to absorb moisture thereby protecting your floor.
