Up Govt Improving The Silk Route In Varanasi
Varanasi is one of the major silk producing cities in the country
, particularly renowned for its Banarasi silk sari making. In view of the immense potential of the city, the Government of Uttar Pradesh (UP) has planned to set up a silk exchange in Varanasi district in order to upgrade the silk industry in the Purvanchal region. It is expected that the silk exchange will be set up by mid-2010, which will thereby facilitate adequate supply of silk at reasonable rates to silk traders and sari manufacturers in the region.The proposed silk exchange is also expected to keep a check on the smuggling of silk in the state, which will thereby lower the expenses of silk traders and manufacturers.
Even though annual consumption of silk in UP is about 5,000 tonnes, only 50 tonnes is produced by the state. This is despite the presence of 160 government farms in the state that deal with mulberry silk culture
Given that the unorganised sector has a significant presence in silk trade in the region, the proposed silk exchange will give a huge boost to the small and micro players in this industry, says Ramesh Mullick, proprietor of Shakti Limited, a small-sized silk manufacturer in Varanasi. The project would require about Rs 15 crore with the Government of India (GoI) providing 80% of the funds and the remaining amount would be borne by the state.
The silk exchange is proposed to be set up in the industrial area of Ramnagar, for which about 2 bighas of land will be required.
Problems in silk region
It has been noted that MSMEs, which have a large presence in the silk industry in Varanasi, are unable to turn out high productivity due to poor infrastructure. This is increasingly making it difficult for these players to sustain their business, says Ashok Gupta, manager of Nirmal Private Limited, a small-sized silk manufacturer in Varanasi.
The small silk traders and manufacturers are hoping that with the setting up of the silk exchange, the issues arsing in the industry will be diminished.
