Recent studies indicate an alleged relationship between Topamax and birth defects. Two of those defects, cleft lip and cleft palate from Topamax, occur during the first trimester of a pregnancy. This means a woman taking Topamax could be unaware that she is pregnant and that the drug in her system may already be adversely affecting the child. Another birth defect that has been linked to Topamax is hypospadias, or the abnormal formation of other body parts.

Topamax is the primary medication physicians prescribe to patients living with epilepsy or migraine headaches, two patient populations that may account for as many as 2.3 million people being treated for epilepsy and another 30 million for migraines. Data from the U.S. Center for Disease Control confirms that women experience migraines at three times the rate as men. Because of its effectiveness, some patients are given Topamax for bipolar disorders, although the drug was not originally approved for that use
