The Situation Regarding Heartburn In Women

Heartburn is the price we pay for indulging in things our bodies don't like

. Eating too much or too fast, having drinks that are carbonated or have caffeine in them and even smoking and drinking will result in a problem with heartburn. We pay by suffering pain behind the chest bone, burning in the stomach and throat, inability to have a good night sleep and having no energy to work and enjoy life.

Unfortunately for women, they are more likely to have to deal with heartburn than men. If you are not watching what you eat, man or woman, is not going to help you against heartburn. People who are overweight are more inclined to the effects of acid reflux and heartburn. Heartburn and weight loss seem to go hand-in-hand.

During pregnancy, frequent heartburn is one of the most common complaints. It is difficult enough to go through all the changes pregnancy brings and heartburn isn't helping. A woman who is pregnant may still have to deal with heartburn even though she's watching what she eats. Growing baby is pushing the stomach up, pressing it towards esophagus and frequently causing contents of the stomach, together with stomach acid, to back up, resulting in heartburn. The problem won't go away until the baby is born.

Suggestions for the relief of heartburn in pregnant women are the same as with any other heartburn sufferer: eat smaller and more frequent meals, avoid greasy, acidic and spicy foods and stay away from coffee and chocolate. Definitively stay away from alcohol and tobacco. Protecting the baby is of the upmost important.

It's crucial that pregnant women don't overeat because it greatly reduces the chance for the contents of the stomach to go into the esophagus. Even water can trigger a heartburn episode. Since drinking water is very important while being pregnant, it's best to sip it throughout the day.

Exercising can also cause heartburn, so it is important to wait a few hours after the meal.

Heartburn in women can also be the result of the type of clothes being worn. If they are too tight they will press on the stomach which will cause stomach acid to go into the esophagus and burn it.

Chocolate is one of the biggest triggers of heartburn attacks. Most women eat more chocolate under extreme emotional distress and anguish. Chocolate contains both caffeine and theobromine which are stimulants and a little bit of phenethylamine which triggers serotonin production. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is responsible for that change in mood that happens after you eat a piece of chocolate. It's why women eat chocolate when faced with an life crisis.

Stress can also cause heartburn in women (as well as men). Both men and women have to deal with a lot of stress in their lives, but women feel it especially because they juggle so many duties - maintaining the home, caring for the children, cooking, cleaning and a host of other responsibilities. Stress can affect the body in many ways. Heartburn can be just one of them. While it is extremely difficult if not impossible to get rid of stress completely, it is possible to focus energies on other things. Learning some stress-relieving techniques, exercising more or simple turning your attention to something that will take your mind off your stress.
