The History Of Spas

A visit to the spa has been one way that people have tried to improve their health and sense of well-being for centuries

. Archaeological finds show that humans sought out hot mineral springs as early as the bronze age. Bathing was a key component of life in both Ancient Greece and Rome, and bathing and drinking water enriched minerals was even practiced during the Middle Ages.

Several towns in the United States became known for their springs and spas. Saratoga Springs, NY was used by combatants on both sides during the French and Indian Wars and later became a tourist attraction after the Revolutionary War. Hot Springs, AR was a gathering place for centuries before it became a national park in 1921. There are several other examples of cities both here and abroad where towns and cities flourished near hot mineral springs.

Modern day spas are a combination of the ancient spa tradition and another long-standing aspect of culture the beauty salon. Todays day spas offer services that help with health and wellness, as well as beauty treatments like manicures, pedicures and makeovers. The term day spa was coined in the 1980s and today is an industry with tremendous growth. The International Spa Association offers the following statistics:

By June 2008 there were over 18,000 spas in the United States

Between July 2007 and June 2008 the number of locations grew by 25%

1 in 4 Americans has been to a spa

The industry generated over nearly $11 billion dollars of revenue in 2007

Two recent trends in the day spa industry, that offer the potential for still more growth are: day spa parties and travelling day spas. Day spa parties, even for girls as young as five, offer the opportunity for a little extra pampering in a social setting. Available services, refreshments and other details depend on the type of party and participants, and they offer guests a chance to relax and enjoy one anothers company. Travelling day spas offer many of the same features as an in-studio party, but the convenience of a party in ones home, place of business or other location.

A pampering day at the spa can benefit your mind, body and spirit -- a fact that has been understood in one form or another for centuries. Whether you are seeking the health benefits of a hot mineral spring at local resort, or a mani-pedi at your local day spa there are many opportunities to treat yourself to a little bit of luxury.
